SOLD – De Coene Dry bar, Style of Gio Ponti, Italy, 1950’s
Extraordinary dry bar in the style of Gio Ponti (1891-1987). Rectangular case piece of fruitwood veneer suspended upon ebonized tapered legs and base with brass hardware. Includes two vertical fluted doors flanking a drop-down secretary or bar surface over three drawers. Originally intended as a dry bar, but today is useful in a variety of storage applications. Original attribution to famed Italian designer, Gio Ponti, based on documentation by the respected French auction house, Tajan, who states that the piece was initially executed by Gio Ponti for the residence of the Ambassador of Italy to Brussels, Belgium. More recent attributions have been made to Alfred Hendrickx and to De Coene. Belgium, 1950s.
